On Monday, May 17, 2021, U.S Attorney General Merrick B. Garland announced the forming of the COVID-19 Fraud Enforcement Task Force, which brings together several government agencies to coordinate DOJ’s enforcement efforts against fraud relating to COVID-19 relief programs that assist workers and businesses affected by the pandemic.

The agencies, which include the Executive Office of the United States Attorney, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Department of Homeland Security, and the Small Business Administration, among others, will focus on investigating and prosecuting domestic and international criminals, who exploit COVID-19 relief programs for personal and financial gain.  Additionally, the Task Force will help the agencies administering these programs in preventing and detecting fraud to minimize the damage caused to fraud victims.

“The Department of Justice will use every available federal tool — including criminal, civil, and administrative actions — to combat and prevent COVID-19 relief fraud.  We look forward to working with our federal government colleagues to bring to justice those who seek to profit unlawfully from the pandemic,” Attorney General Garland stated in the announcement.
